“Mary John” wins Bookseller Prize from Catalonia

The Catalan edition of “Mary John” by Ana Pessoa just won the XXIII Prize Bookseller in the category of Children’s and youth literature other literatures. The book is edited in Catalan by the publisher L’Altra Tribu.

“Mary John” is illustrated by Bernardo P. Carvalho and the translation to catalan is by Mercè Ubach.

The Bookseller Prize is one of the most important literary prizes in Catalonia.

Local booksellers vote to elect the best books published in the previous year in different categories: Children’s and Young People’s Literature in Catalan; Children’s and youth literature — other literatures; Illustrated Album; Other Literatures; Catalan Literature.


Apart from this Bookseller prize, “Mary John” was already selected for the White Ravens Catalogue in 2017 and for Banco del Libro best books of the year list (2020). It was also recommended by the Fundación Cuatrogatos Prize (2020) and by the IBBY catalogue for children’s and youth literature (Mexico, 2020). In Brazil it was considered “Highly recommended” in the category Portuguese Literature (FNLIJ 2016). In Portugal is recommended by the Portuguese National Reading List.

“Mary John” is currently published in Brazil, Catalonia, the Netherlands and Latin America, and an English edition is in the making.
