Inês Viegas Oliveira wins the Portuguese National Illustration Prize 2023

The National Illustration Prize, organised by the Portuguese Directorate-General for Books, Archives and Libraries (DGLAB), is an annual prize awarded to one Portuguese illustrator for a work published during the previous year.

The jury was unanimous in its decision to award the prize for the illustrations of O duelo – published by Planeta Tangerina last summer – highlighting “the singular relationship between the text and illustrations, the graphic originality which makes it stand out from other more standard approaches, and the work’s visually rich nature”.

The jury also commended the originality of three other of the publisher’s books:

Desenha tudo o que quiseres, with text and illustrations by Madalena Matoso
Apanhar ar, apanhar sol, with illustrations by Bernardo P. Carvalho and text by Isabel Minhós Martins
O que é isto?, with illustrations by Yara Kono and text by Ana Pessoa
