This weekend, the 4th Guimarães Illustration Biennial (BIG) took place. The winners of the prizes were announced and have given us not one but two reasons to be proud:
Madalena Matoso won the BIG Grand Prize and Inês Viegas Oliveira was awarded the BIG Revelation Prize.
Of Madalena’s illustrations the jury remarked: “The works selected reflect her wider body of work, where the chromatics and an apparent stylistic simplicity contribute to making extremely complex images which offer multiple layers of reading”. They also mentioned “ (…) the skill used in developing the shapes and the capacity to channel readers along graphic-visual paths which don’t fail to surprise”.
Commenting on Inês Viegas Oliveira’s submission, the jury highlighted “ (…) her ability to create a universe of her own, which manages to challenge and haunt the observer, producing multiple interpretations”.
BIG achievements and even bigger congratulations to Madalena, Inês and all the other winners.
