This weekend, the 4th Guimar\u00e3es Illustration Biennial (BIG) took place. The winners of the prizes were announced and have given us not one but two reasons to be proud:<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Madalena Matoso won the BIG Grand Prize and In\u00eas Viegas Oliveira was awarded the BIG Revelation Prize.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Of Madalena\u2019s illustrations the jury remarked: \u201cThe works selected reflect her wider body of work, where the chromatics and an apparent stylistic simplicity contribute to making extremely complex images which offer multiple layers of reading\u201d. They also mentioned \u201c (\u2026) the skill used in developing the shapes and the capacity to channel readers along graphic-visual paths which don\u2019t fail to surprise\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commenting on In\u00eas Viegas Oliveira\u2019s submission, the jury highlighted \u201c (\u2026) her ability to create a universe of her own, which manages to challenge and haunt the observer, producing multiple interpretations\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
